SEIU’s Verrett: Tonight’s pro-worker victories just the beginning of what’s coming in 2026

Service Employees International Union President April Verrett issued the following statement celebrating key wins for working people in Tuesday’s elections, including a clean sweep in statewide Virginia elections:

WASHINGTON, DC – “Across the country, working people spoke loud and clear tonight, and we’re done letting the powerful few write the rules for the rest of us. Voters chose leaders who will fight to lower prices, make healthcare more affordable, and put families before billionaires.

In Virginia, SEIU members and workers turned out in force to elect Abigail Spanberger as governor. Spanberger has been a steady voice for raising wages, protecting Medicaid, and making it easier for workers to form a union. Throughout the Republican shutdown, she showed up and fought for the people who keep this country running.

In New Jersey, public, healthcare, warehouse, laundry and school cafeteria workers powered the turnout for Mikie Sherrill’s win for governor. Sherrill pledged to address skyrocketing healthcare premiums courtesy of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.

Zohran Mamdani’s landslide win in New York City set the tone for the night, showing us all what’s possible when candidates put working people in the spotlight. His campaign inspired young voters, immigrants, and people of all backgrounds.

Workers won victories from Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court to the Charlotte City Council, sending the message that it is time for a worker’s agenda at every level of government.

Tonight was a reminder that when working people organize together, we win together. This is just the beginning of what’s coming in 2026. We got next.”
