SEIU’s Sáenz: Stripping TPS from 350,000 Venezuelans Will Devastate Families, Communities, Economy

WASHINGTON, D.C.Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Secretary-Treasurer Rocio Sáenz issued the following statement in response to today’s Supreme Court decision that allows the Trump administration to move forward with terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelan nationals:

“Ripping away protections from over 350,000 Venezuelan TPS holders is an attack on immigrant communities and a direct blow to the essential workforce that powers our economy.

Across the country, Venezuelan TPS holders are care workers, janitors, childcare providers, airport service workers, and hospitality staff. Forcing them out of their jobs will destabilize entire industries, deepen staffing shortages, and create ripple effects for businesses, families, and communities alike.

Many Venezuelans have lived here for years, raising children, paying taxes, and contributing to our economy in every way. They fled political violence and humanitarian crisis, only to now face the threat of being uprooted again. Working people should not live in fear of deportation. Immigrant workers—regardless of status—deserve stability, dignity, and the chance to thrive.

SEIU members are firmly in solidarity with Venezuelan TPS holders and all immigrant workers. We will continue to fight for permanent protections and a path to citizenship—because no one should be punished for seeking safety, and no one who helps build this country should be treated as disposable.”
