SEIU’s Verrett: Dismantling the Department of Education is an all-out attack on our nation’s future

April Verrett, president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), issued the following statement in response to the Department of Education’s plan to fire half of its staff.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “President Trump’s Education Secretary Linda McMahon’s firing of 1,315 Department of Education workers is an all-out attack on our nation's future and will roll back decades of progress to ensure that every student, regardless of race, gender, disability, family income or zip code has equal access to opportunity. Once again, this administration is following the Project 2025 Playbook to destroy the services that working people rely on to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and corporations who have never paid their fair share.

The gutting of the Department of Education is devastating to students of all ages and the civil servants who are losing their jobs. It will destabilize the education of students in high-poverty schools and for students with special needs, and all but eliminate the enforcement of access and civil rights protections that makes education available for all. We cannot trust this administration to stand by its word to uphold and maintain the programs and resources they are obligated to deliver by statute. Linda McMahon made her mandate clear – to eliminate the Department of Education.

This administration is trying to distract and divide us by targeting trans students, crushing free speech on college campuses, erasing history, and spreading fear among immigrant communities. But there are few American institutions more unifying than public education. Public schools are the heart of our communities – they need more funding and support, not less.”
