SEIU’s Verrett: Trump’s Order to Freeze Federal Grants Hurts Working Families

Service Employees International Union President April Verrett issued the following statement on President Trump’s order to halt billions in federal grants for public service programs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Trump’s Project 2025 agenda to enrich billionaires by cutting services for working people is in full swing. His attacks on federal workers and entire government agencies have now expanded to a widespread freeze on billions in federal funding for programs that working people depend on. It’s part and parcel of his plan to benefit the wealthiest Americans and big corporations while leaving the rest of us in the cold.

These federal funding attacks and threats could cut lifelines for working families, from new mothers and infants to students who depend on meals in schools and families who depend on housing and child care vouchers. There are reports that Medicaid portals are down in all 50 states.

The impact will be widespread and will be felt across every community. Unfortunately, it’s just the tip of the spear for Trump’s grand plan to give big tax breaks to the rich while gutting programs like Medicaid, which funds care for seniors, people with disabilities, children, and poor families. From his first day back in office, Donald Trump has shown us that he stands with the Musks, the Zuckerbergs and the Bezoses of the world. His actions do nothing to fix the problems people are facing, such as the high cost of housing, groceries, care and prescriptions.

But while Trump and his billionaire crew try to divide us any way they can, working people – Black, Latino, AAPI, Indigenous and immigrant – are building power by joining together in unions and fighting back to win a brighter future. We won’t back down.”
