SEIU members urge Senate to repeal GPO-WEP

WASHINGTON, DC – Members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) joined allies today in calling on the U.S. Senate to pass the Social Security Fairness Act, which repeals the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). Last week, the US House passed a measure to repeal these two rules that cut Social Security retirement benefits for janitors, teachers, emergency responders and other public workers who have access to pensions at work.

“Every person who works hard and plays by the rules should have the opportunity to retire with dignity no matter where they work. By repealing the GPO and WEP, we can help ensure that more people providing vital services to our communities are both respected and fairly compensated for the contributions they make to our economy,” said SEIU International President April Verrett.

SEIU members applaud House members for taking steps to right this wrong that threatens economic security for public workers when they can no longer work. We hope that the Senate follows their lead by repealing the GPO and WEP.”
