SEIU’s Henry: Julie Su is the Labor Secretary our country needs to continue on the path to building a more inclusive economy

WASHINGTON – As the Senate HELP Committee begins its confirmation hearing with Labor Secretary nominee Julie Su, SEIU President Mary Kay Henry released the following statement:

“From serving as California’s Labor Secretary during the pandemic to serving as U.S. Deputy Labor Secretary during our record economic recovery, Julie Su has demonstrated her commitment to championing the rights of all working people. That’s why working people are coming together across racial, occupational and geographical lines to call on the Senate to quickly confirm Acting Secretary Su as our next U.S. Secretary of Labor.

Working hand-in-hand with former Secretary Marty Walsh, Su helped to deliver on the President’s promise of an economy built from ‘the bottom up and middle out,’ creating a record 12.4 million jobs and achieving record low unemployment. In particular, she has led efforts to ensure that federal dollars from game-changing legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS Act, and Inflation Reduction Act are creating good, union jobs that are widely available to workers across the country.

During my time working with Julie Su on California’s Future of Work Commission, I saw first hand how effective she is in engaging business leaders and working in partnership to create a brighter and more equitable future. I know she will continue to build on that track record and finish the job President Biden and Marty Walsh started to deliver for working people and families as Secretary of Labor.”
