SEIU’s Verrett: Senate budget bill taking aim at Medicaid must be rejected
Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President April Verrett issued the following statement about the budget resolution bill being considered by the U.S. Senate:
WASHINGTON, DC – “Let’s be clear: There is no good or right way to rip away healthcare coverage from 80 million children, senior citizens, veterans, working mothers and fathers, and people with disabilities. The budget resolution introduced by Senate Republicans is no better than the version being pushed by House Republicans. Whether you do it all at once or incrementally – by hook, or by crook – the result is the same: Working families and local communities will be devastated, while billionaires will get tax breaks.
Cuts to Medicaid would hurt every family in every zip code, in red states, blue states, rural, urban and suburban communities. It would put pressure on state budgets and lead to cuts to other services including child care and housing assistance and push thousands of home care workers, nurses, doctors and other healthcare workers out of work. The timing of these cuts is particularly cruel at a time when so many people are losing jobs and the cost of groceries, medications and other everyday items continues to rise.
SEIU members urge all members of Congress to recognize this bill for what it is and reject it. It is anti-worker, anti-immigrant and anti-environment, while doing nothing to lower prices or help working families. Working people will not be divided, and we will hold all of our elected leaders accountable for their votes.”
