SEIU’s Verrett: Working people won’t let President Trump silence us

WASHINGTON, DC: Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President April Verrett issued the following statement today in response to President Trump’s executive memorandum directing federal agencies to reject collective bargaining agreements that were executed during the last month of the Biden Administration:

“This memorandum simply makes working Americans’ lives harder — especially parents and family caregivers balancing work, childcare, and other household responsibilities. And it does nothing to lower the cost of groceries.

“President Trump and his Administration have absolutely zero commitment to ensuring working people have an opportunity to thrive. Collective bargaining is the way that workers are able to have a voice and standards without being subject to their bosses’ whims. This is union-busting, plain and simple.

“This memorandum jeopardizes the livelihoods of federal workers, who do essential work to keep our country running. Along with attacks on Medicaid, Head Start, and other vital programs Americans rely on in our day-to-day lives, undermining workers’ union rights harms families and communities.

“SEIU members and working people will not allow these continuous attacks to silence us. We will not back down. We will continue to ask why this President has failed to keep his promise to lower the cost of eggs and housing and is instead attacking collective bargaining agreements and cutting programs, making it harder for us to put food on the table, pay rent, and take care of our loved ones—all so he can fund tax breaks for billionaires.”
