SEIU President April Verrett's statement on the death of Cecile Richards

For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Today, we honor Cecile Richards—a bold organizer, a fearless advocate, a feminist activist, and a visionary leader whose impact will resonate for generations.

Cecile’s journey began in the labor movement, standing with workers who risked everything for a better life. Her time organizing janitors in Los Angeles, many of whom had sacrificed so much to come to the US to start a new life, reflected her relentless belief in justice and her deeply personal approach to fighting for workers’ rights.

Whether organizing workers, leading Planned Parenthood, or fighting for reproductive freedom and equality, her passion for justice was matched only by her belief in the power of collective action and her commitment to building a better future for all.

We offer our deepest condolences to her family, Kirk, Lily, Hannah, Daniel and Teddy. But this is more than a moment of mourning—it’s a call to action. Cecile’s legacy demands that we carry her fight forward: for workers, women, and justice.

Rest in power, Cecile. Your story isn’t over. It lives in every fight, every victory, and every step toward the world you envisioned.”
