WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Senate has taken a vital step toward restoring economic security for over 2 million public sector workers by passing the Social Security Fairness Act. This landmark legislation repeals the unfair Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), two policies that have cut Social Security benefits for public workers.
“Today’s vote ensures that millions of workers who have dedicated their lives to public service can now retire with dignity and financial security," said Service Employees International President April Verrett. "These workers earned their benefits through years of service, and it’s time their contributions are fully recognized and protected."
"This decision represents a much-needed correction that will improve the financial stability of these workers and their families, ensuring they can access the Social Security benefits they’ve earned through their hard work."
