SEIU’s Henry: House Republicans’ attempt to impeach Secretary Mayorkas a “gross abuse of power”

WASHINGTON, DC Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Workers International Union (SEIU) released the following statement on House Republicans' attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:

"Let’s call it what it is — House Republicans’ ridiculous effort to impeach Secretary Mayorkas is a gross abuse of power that has nothing to do with security at the border. Every minute spent on this absurd exercise is time that Congress isn’t working on the issues taxpayers elected them to address such as raising wages, health care, child and elder care and the climate crisis.

House Republicans are misusing impeachment authority, which is designed to be a rarely used power to protect the nation from criminal officeholders. No cabinet secretary has been impeached since the 1870s. Under the Constitution, impeachment requires allegations of treason, bribery, or high crimes or misdemeanors—none of which remotely apply to Secretary Mayorkas. This ranks among the least justifiable impeachment efforts in history.

SEIU members call on House Homeland Security Committee Republicans to end this cynical and hypocritical process immediately and get back to serious business.”
