WASHINGTON, DC – Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President Mary Kay Henry released the following statement on Gov. Newsom’s appointment of Laphonza Butler to the US Senate:
“SEIU members couldn’t be happier that Gov. Newsom has appointed former SEIU Local 2015 and SEIU California president Laphonza Butler to represent California in the US Senate.”
“Laphonza Butler has dedicated her life to uniting working people and fighting for economic and racial justice. She is a strong, passionate leader, and she will make an outstanding US Senator.”
“As the president of SEIU 2015, Laphonza Butler led the fight for fair wages and respect for home care workers. As president of SEIU California, she was a driving force in winning the first statewide $15 an hour minimum wage in the nation. She has been a strong ally electing pro-women candidates as president of Emily’s List.”
