WASHINGTON — Responding to yesterday’s SCOTUS ruling on Title 42, SEIU International Executive Vice President Rocio Sáenz issued the following statement:

“For far too long, tens of thousands of people, most of whom are Black, brown, and indigenous, have been unlawfully rejected and denied the right to legally seek asylum on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Since the Trump administration instituted Title 42, human rights advocates have documented thousands of kidnappings, assaults, and killings in Mexico against people who were expelled or denied entry due to Title 42. The continuation of Title 42 will result in additional and unnecessary pain and trauma for families.

America has always been a beacon of hope for millions of people around the world fleeing unimaginable harm and danger. Title 42’s expulsions continue to slam the door in the faces of people, including children, who are asking for an opportunity to legally apply for safety in America. We must do better. We can do better. This harmful policy must be ended for once and for all.”
