SEIU Statement on Virginia Election Results

RICHMOND, VA - The results of this election are disappointing and should serve as a warning to the Democratic majority in Congress.  Tonight’s loss demonstrates the urgency that Democratic elected leaders need to deliver on the issues that matter most to working people. We know voters overwhelmingly agree that we deserve high wages, good jobs, unions for all, and affordable health care. Republicans focused on dividing Virginians by race, ultimately driving voters to stay home and hand a win to anti-worker politicians.

“This loss threatens the progress working people have fought for and won throughout Virginia in recent years. Glenn Youngkin and the Virginia GOP’s ideology of hate and division threatens Black and brown Virginians and all people committed to building an inclusive America. Our movement will fight to protect everyone who stands in harm’s way as a result of this election,” said Mary Kay Henry, SEIU International President. “As we look toward the 2022 election, this is a moment when we must all recognize the urgent need for leaders to work harder to earn the votes of the Black and brown voters across America who delivered progressive majorities in 2020. Congress must deliver on that promise by immediately passing both the Build Back Better Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal that will deliver positive change that everyone can feel and taking meaningful action to defend our electoral system from far-right attacks on the freedom to vote. There’s no sugarcoating how disappointing the results of this election are, but our movement is resilient and this fight is just beginning.”
