SEIU’s Henry: Julie Su, Marty Walsh will transform the Department of Labor

San Francisco, Calif. - Service Employees International Union (SEIU) International President Mary Kay Henry released the following statement ahead of the Senate Health Employment Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s vote on Julie Su’s nomination to be deputy secretary of labor:

“From standing with janitors and other essential workers on the frontlines of COVID-19 to fighting for women’s rights, Julie Su has shown her commitment to making sure working people are respected, protected and paid. I had the pleasure of witnessing her dedication and strong leadership while serving on Gov. Newsom’s California Future of Work Commision.  She has consistently championed California's working families in policy and practice including the “Wage Theft is a Crime” campaign and the Property Services Workers Protection Act.

“SEIU members and worker leaders in the Fight for $15 and a Union know that Julie Su will continue to be an ally for working families across the country as our deputy secretary of labor. Along with Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, she will transform the Department of Labor into an agency that prioritizes the rights of workers over corporations and respects their right to organize for higher wages, benefits and respect on the job. This is the type of leadership that our country needs to build an inclusive, resilient America -- in which families of every race are safe and secure with the opportunity for a decent life. I strongly urge the HELP Committee to send her nomination to the floor and for every senator to support her confirmation.”
