SEIU’s Henry: Elijah Cummings will be remembered as a champion for working Americans

WASHINGTON, DC - SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry released the following statement on the passing of Representative Elijah Cummings:

“Rep. Cummings’s passing is a loss for working people in his beloved Baltimore, across Maryland and around the country. Despite serving in the greatest halls of power, Rep. Cummings never forgot that he was the son of sharecroppers, and remained a steadfast champion for justice. From his position on the Oversight and Reform Committee, Rep. Cummings held corporations accountable, fought for federal employees and contractors and tried to ensure government worked for everyone. And he used his position not just as an elected official, but as a moral and community leader, to push for an increased minimum wage and quality, affordable healthcare for all Americans.

“SEIU members in Baltimore, Maryland, and the entire nation mourn the passing of Rep. Cummings. Our condolences are with his wife Maya and the entire Cummings family.”
