SEIU’s Henry: Working people need a Secretary of Labor that will be a champion for working people; not Eugene Scalia

WASHINGTON, DC—Service Employees International Union (SEIU) International President Mary Kay Henry released the following statement today in response to members of the U.S. Senate confirming Eugene Scalia’s nomination for Secretary of Labor:

“Every single working person in this country—no matter where they’re from, what they look like or what they do for a living—should be recognized as being just as valuable as the corporations and small businesses that employ them.

At a time when America’s economy and democracy are out of balance, we need a Secretary of Labor that will be a champion for all working people. Eugene Scalia’s record shows that he will not enforce evidence-based rules the DOL has put in place to protect working people and their families. He has consistently sided with corporations at the expense of the men and women that help them make record profits.

“Eugene Scalia’s nomination being fast-tracked by Republican leaders shows they are willing to hurt everyone by keeping wages low, making it hard to join unions and allowing corporations to abuse their power and influence. The American public is not fooled by the timing of this nomination process. These Senators who hastily pushed Mr. Scalia’s nomination forward will have to answer to the working families that sent them to Washington.”
