SEIU’s Blue: President Trump’s rule attempts to seize safety net programs from working families and their American children

WASHINGTON, D.C.—SEIU International Executive Vice President Luisa Blue issued the following statement in response to the United States Conference of Mayors’ resolution opposing changes to the ‘public charge’ rule:

“We applaud the United States Conference of Mayors for calling on the Administration to end their attempts to make changes to the ‘public charge’ rule that will severely hurt working people, families and low-income immigrants.

“If changes to the rule are finalized, it could force families to forego needed healthcare or go hungry or be cold in winter in exchange for the opportunity of becoming a green card holder in the future.  It will drive up poverty among families with children, and have lasting consequences on the well-being of working families and the communities in which they live.

"It is immoral to force families to choose between the well-being of their U.S. citizen children or a future in America; between feeding their kids or keeping their families together; between receiving critical medical care or receiving a green card. This rule doesn’t reflect America’s Values. Changes to this rule must be stopped.”
