SEIU’s Sáenz: Congressional Republicans failed immigrant families, yet again

WASHINGTON, D.C.—SEIU International Executive Vice President and iAmerica Action President Rocio Sáenz issued the following statement reacting to the implications of the omnibus spending package passed by Congress.

“Congressional Republicans failed Dreamers and immigrant families yet again. They passed a federal spending bill without including billions of dollars to apprehend, detain, and deport immigrants but no legislative fix for Dreamers and TPS holders. Trump ended DACA over 7 months ago and the Republicans who control Congress still haven’t fixed it.

“Congressional Republicans pretend to care about Dreamers and immigrant families. But actions speak louder than words. By the end of next year, Trump will have moved more than a million people with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS), or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) from legal status to undocumented, yet the Republicans who control Congress have done nothing. The omnibus spending bill represents yet another lost opportunity.

“We are in the middle of this fight, not the end. We will continue to fight to protect immigrant communities across the country. We are on the right side of history.

“Come November, we will hold elected officials accountable for standing in the way of immigrant families and call on our champions to do everything in their power to protect immigrant youth and their families.”
