SEIU: Denham Makes Right Choice, But America Needs a Vote on Immigration Reform Now
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, on Univision's Al Punto with Jorge Ramos," Rep. Jeff Denham announced his decision to co-sponsor HR. 15, the "Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act," becoming the first Republican supporter of the House immigration bill.
The Service Employees International Union's (SEIU) Executive Vice President Rocio Saenz issued the following response:
"Undoubtedly, Representative Denham has made the right choice by breaking from the House GOP ambivalence to the crisis of our broken immigration system and signing onto HR. 15, a bill that was modeled after the bipartisan Senate bill.
"While we applaud him for supporting comprehensive immigration legislation that will allow millions to walk the pathway to citizenship, Rep. Denham must also take concrete steps with his Republican colleagues to vote for an immigration reform bill this fall.
"It's in the best interest of Speaker Boehner and his party to stop playing politics on an issue that affects millions of families. Our communities suffer every day the House delays reforming a system that perpetuates family separations, deportations and the weakening of workers' rights. This has never been a political game - it's a moral crisis.
"The American public demands our elected leaders pass an immigration proposal with a path to citizenship. The bipartisan votes are there to support it. Now, it's only a matter of getting the job done. The time is now."
