SEIU President Mary Kay Henry on Bob Edgar's Death:
Progressive Movement Lost a Stalwart Fighter for Social and Economic Justice"
(Washington, D.C.) Following is a statement by Mary Kay Henry, President of SEIU, on the death Bob Edgar, president of Common Cause and a former U.S. representative from Pennsylvania.
"Our deepest sympathies are with the Bob Edgar's family. The progressive movement lost a friend and passionate advocate today. Former members of Congress can move on from their posts and do just about anything. Bob Edgar chose to use his influence to stand up for social and economic justice. As leader of Common Cause, he crusaded against undue influence of money in politics and worked to hold elected officials and other powerbrokers accountable to the public. He understood that ordinary people need a national voice as well as a voice in their communities. He used his megaphone to call attention to how Citizen's United is corrupting our elections, and he led Common Cause's work to protect the right to vote.
"Working people across the nation are in the midst of a renewed call to politicians and corporate interests that the nation must change course and work to reverse growing income inequality. Leaders like Bob, a stalwart fighter for social and economic justice, are vital to this struggle. His leadership and vision will be missed."
