Ryan Budget: We've Seen This (Bad) Movie Before
WASHINGTON, DC - After House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) released his FY 2014 budget resolution, Mary Kay Henry, President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), issued the following statement:
Apparently, Chairman Ryan learned nothing from the 2012 election. Yet again, he has proposed an extreme budget that would gut vital services while providing tax giveaways for the wealthy and corporations. This is exactly the philosophy that voters rejected last November.
"We've seen this movie before. The recycled proposals in the Ryan budget would dismantle Medicare, block grant Medicaid, make our seniors pay more for their care and cost our economy jobs.
"Inexplicably, the Chairman's budget also calls for repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court and is now the law of the land. Along with his claim that this budget would eliminate the deficit in a decade, Chairman Ryan's proposal is not based in reality.
"Even Speaker Boehner has admitted that we can't cut our way to prosperity, but Chairman Ryan seems to disagree. We need to invest in jobs, not enact harmful, irrational cuts. At a time when our economy is still recovering, this budget focuses on all the wrong priorities and should be put back on the shelf and left there."
