SEIU on Latest Jobs Numbers:<br>Pass American Jobs Act Now
Washington, D.C.—Service Employees International Union (SEIU) International President Mary Kay Henry released the following statement in response to the latest jobs report:
“Today’s jobs numbers are yet another painful reminder to the 25 million Americans looking for full-time work that Republicans in Congress have turned their backs on the American people by blocking every effort to create good American jobs.
“Instead of a few thousand jobs, we need to create millions of jobs right now by passing the American Jobs Act and putting Americans to work in good jobs that are required in our communities.
“The thousands of Americans occupying Wall Street and financial centers across the country make it crystal clear that the American people are fed up with an economy that caters to Wall Street CEOs and millionaires while crushing the rest of us under this deepening recession.
“Congress can begin to respond to the demands of the American people by passing the American Jobs Act and putting our country back to work rebuilding our outdated and dangerous roads and bridges, ensuring our kids have first-class schools to learn in and making sure our communities have the first responders and caregivers we need to be safe and healthy.”
With 2.1 million members in Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico, SEIU is the fastest-growing union in the Americas. Focused on uniting workers in healthcare, public services and property services, SEIU members are winning better wages, healthcare and more secure jobs for our communities, while uniting their strength with their counterparts around the world to help ensure that workers--not just corporations and CEOs--benefit from today's global economy. www.seiu.org
