SEIU Statement Following Shootings in Tucson
Following news of the brutal shooting attack in Tuscon, Arizona, SEIU President Mary Kay Henry issued the following statement:
Today is a sad day for all Americans. As a country, we know there is no place for the sort of terror and hate reported in Tucson, Arizona. On behalf of the 2.2 million nurses, janitors, homecare aides, bus drivers and other members of the Service Employees International Union, I would like to express our deepest condolences to all those touched by this tragedy. From Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who is battling for her life, to those who were injured and killed, you will be in our prayers now and in the coming days and weeks.
"Representative Gabrielle Giffords is a friend and an ally to working families across this country. Called to public service by the pursuit of justice for all people, Rep. Giffords has been a leader on making healthcare more affordable, fixing our broken immigration system and improving the lives of working families. Even when it wasn't easy, Gabrielle Giffords has walked with middle class Americans and fought for what was right.
"Time and again--from a podium on the floor of the House of Representatives or working with her constituents in Arizona's 8th District--Gabrielle Giffords has proven that she's a fighter. And this evening, as doctors continue to treat her, we pray she will prove it once again."
Statement from Maya Castillo, President, Pima Chapter of SEIU Local 5 AZ:
"We are deeply saddened by the horrifying events today in Tucson and are praying for Representative Gabrielle Giffords, her aide Ron Barber, and all of the victims and their families. Rep. Giffords is a champion for working families, especially through her efforts for healthcare reform and helping to rid Arizona of predatory lenders. She and her staff have proven to be honest and accessible -- the way our elected officials and public servants should be. This is a terrible day for Arizona and our nation."
Statement from Scott Washburn, SEIU Arizona State Director:
""We are shocked and deeply saddened by today's tragic events in our state. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who lost their lives, and to those who are now fighting to pull through, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who has always been a dedicated and courageous advocate for all working people in Arizona."
