American People Counting on Senate to Finish the Job on Wall Street Reform
Following Passage of Wall Street Reform in the U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. -- The Service Employees International Union released the following statement of SEIU President Mary Kay Henry following the passage of the Wall Street reform bill in the U.S. House.
For far too long, American workers have mastered the high-wire act of doing more for less. First they didn't get raises when they delivered record productivity. Then, when Wall Street's reckless actions crashed the economy, they bailed out the big banks and still lost their jobs, their community services and even their homes.
"We elect our leaders to serve our needs, not the demands of Wall Street CEOs. Americans are justifiably angry when they see anti-worker politicians like House Republican Leader John Boehner and his colleagues in the Senate defending the reckless actions of the big banks.
"It is time to change our priorities. No longer can we accept Americans playing by one set of rules and Wall Street playing by another. American workers are doing their part - they always have. Now it's time for the Senate to step up. It's time to finish the job and immediately pass Wall Street reform."
With 2.2 million members in Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico, SEIU is the fastest-growing union in the Americas. Focused on uniting workers in healthcare, public services and property services, SEIU members are winning better wages, healthcare and more secure jobs for our communities, while uniting their strength with their counterparts around the world to help ensure that workers--not just corporations and CEOs--benefit from today's global economy.
