Oregon Voters' Message to Washington on Eve of State of the Union: Hold Corporations Accountable and Stand Up for the Middle Class
Washington, DC - Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger released the following statement on Oregon voters' passage yesterday of Measures 66 and 67:
As eyes are fixed on Washington waiting for the President's first State of the Union address, the pundits should take a look at Oregon. Yesterday, voters in that state sent a message loud and clear: While many states across the country are making drastic cuts to schools and services for the most vulnerable, working women and men said no more. Oregon's voters decided to take a stand for the Middle Class and make investments in education and public services.
"There has been a lot of talk about the meaning of the Massachusetts election and the mood of the country lately. Yesterday's election sheds real light on the mood of the electorate: voters are seeing positive and progressive change that helps real working families and voters are ready to hold corporations accountable. Congress should take notice."
With 2.2 million members in Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico, SEIU is the fastest-growing union in the Americas. Focused on uniting workers in healthcare, public services and property services, SEIU members are winning better wages, healthcare and more secure jobs for our communities, while uniting their strength with their counterparts around the world to help ensure that workers--not just corporations and CEOs--benefit from today's global economy.
