Workers United Calls on Laborers to Withdraw Petition on Washington DC Hotel
UNITE HERE has successfully represented hotel workers in Washington DC, says Workers United
New York -- The following statement was issued today by Workers United union:
The NLRB has scheduled a representation hearing today at the request of the Baltimore Washington Laborers District Council of the Laborers International Union of North America, which filed a petition with the NLRB on Embassy Suites Hotel (Case No. 5-RC-16351).
"Workers United and UNITE HERE are currently engaged in an effort to resolve our intraunion conflict over jurisdiction in a fair and equitable way.
"UNITE HERE represents the hotel workers in the Washington DC, and Workers United respects the work UNITE HERE has done in that city. Furthermore, we believe that it is in the best interest of the hotel workers in Washington DC that there be one hotel workers union in that city--UNITE HERE. That is why we are calling on the Laborers union to withdraw their petition and recognize UNITE HERE's jurisdiction over these workers."
Workers United is an SEIU affiliate that represents 150,000 workers in the US and Canada who work in the laundry, food service, hospitality, gaming, apparel, textile, manufacturing and distribution industries. It was formed in March 2009 after workers voted to leave the failed merger of UNITE and HERE. www.workers-united.org
