President Obama's Budget: A New Era for Working Families"
WASHINGTON, DC - Change to Win Chair and SEIU International Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger, issued the following statement about President Barack Obama's proposed budget.
"Budgets are more than series of numbers on a page, they represent our nation's priorities and how we will tackle the challenges before us to rebuild the American Dream for our children and grandchildren.
"President Obama's budget represents a new era for working families through a commitment to fiscal responsibility and a willingness to make necessary reforms and critical investments in education, energy, healthcare and infrastructure. It lays the groundwork for a thriving economy where everyone, not just Wall Street fat cats, campaign contributors or Washington insiders, share in our prosperity.
"Earlier this week, President Obama made clear that healthcare reform, this year, is the next step for strengthening our economy. Now he is taking a bold step with a significant investment as a down payment to guarantee quality affordable healthcare for everyone. Congress must step up with the same commitment.
"The budget restores American values to the tax code by eliminating incentives for companies that ship jobs overseas and directing tax cuts to America's workers, the most innovative and industrious on earth. It gives an honest assessment of the challenges we face, restores spending guidelines to ensure we cut the deficit and empowers voters to know how their tax dollars are spent.
"The American people expect solutions, not excuses. Congress needs to work in a bipartisan manner to pass this budget as soon as possible and deliver change that works for America's working families."
