Today We Must Be the Change We Need

Working Families Head to the Polls to Elect President, Congress that Will Turn Economy Around, Win Affordable Healthcare for All

CHICAGO, IL -- Election Day statement by SEIU President Andy Stern:

Paula Hall--a childcare provider from Tacoma, Washington, who lost her home and all her savings when she got sick and couldn't pay her medical bills--will vote today.

"Samara Knight--a nursing assistant from Cleveland, Ohio, who faces foreclosure because she can't afford her mortgage payments and the medication her son needs--will vote today.

"Debbie Bonn--a nurse from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, who lost her daughter in Iraq--will vote today.

"All over this great country, men and woman who each day struggle to make ends meet and take care of their families will get up today, go to the polls and take a huge step toward ensuring a better life for their families. Today, hardworking Americans will vote in record numbers for Barack Obama to be part of the change they need.

"Paula, Samara and Debbie aren't asking for much. They work hard and in return seek a paycheck that supports their family, affordable healthcare, tax fairness, a secure retirement, a voice on the job and a promise that our leaders will act responsibly when deciding whether to send our sons and daughters in the military into harm's way.

"Working families know that Barack Obama and Joe Biden are offering the kind of change we need to reverse the past eight years and look out for the interests of Main Street, not just Wall Street.

"For working families across this country, today is not the end, but the beginning. Starting tonight, we will work with our new President and Congress to put America on a new path and begin fixing our national healthcare system, rebuilding the middle class, creating economy that rewards work instead of wealth and putting the American Dream back within reach of the hardworking men and women who make this country the great."
