SEIU Member Pauline Beck to Address Convention Tonight

Obama Spent Day Working on the Job With Homecare Worker Beck

DENVER, CO-Tonight, SEIU homecare worker Pauline Beck will address the Democratic Convention, speaking to delegates about her experience last summer, spending the day with Barack Obama as he "walked a day in her shoes."

"Senator Obama joined my family for an early breakfast and joined me in caring for my 87-year old client," said Beck. "It was an experience I'll never forget and tonight I get to share it with the rest of America."

"Our next president mopped floors, he did laundry, he made lunch, and he wanted to know every detail about my job," added Beck. "It was the most impressive thing I've ever seen a politician do. I believe he truly understands what our families need to achieve the American Dream."

Throughout the election, SEIU members invited all candidates for president, Democrats and Republicans, to experience firsthand what their lives are like by walking in their shoes.  The program is part of SEIU's program to ensure that presidential candidates experience firsthand what life is like for working people in America.  On August 8, 2007, Barack Obama spent the day working with Beck, a homecare worker in Oakland California.  Later that month, Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden spent the day with SEIU member Marshall Clemons during his job as head building engineer at Harding Middle School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he helped to rebuild a boiler and perform other maintenance tasks.  Senator McCain was invited, but declined to participate.

Reporters interested in talking to Pauline Beck or Marshall Clemons should contact Mark McCullough at 202-812-2528.
