MEDIA ADVISORY for March 28, 2008: Liberty Bell Security Officers Demand a Safe Workplace

WHO: Wackenhut Security Officers

WHEN: Friday, March 28th, 2008 at 12 noon

WHERE: Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia, PA

WHAT: Liberty Bell Security Officers will be leafleting at noon on Friday March 28th. They are coming out to protest a number of cutbacks that their employer Wackenhut has made which threaten the workers' security and that of visitors to the Independence National Historic Park.  Most recently, Wackenhut laid off nine of the officers responsible for screening visitors, making it nearly impossible for the two remaining ones to do their jobs properly. Previously, they took away electronic bag searches and metal detectors, making it much more difficult for the security guards to guarantee that everything brought into the site is safe. During spring, thousands of school children and tourists will visit Independence Mall State Park weekly.  Wackenhut officers want to make sure that the site stays safe. Independence National Historic Park is a federal site.
