SEIU Members Turn Their Focus to Winning Ohio and Texas for Obama
SEIU Launches Multi-Million Dollar Field and Media Campaign
Washington, DC- With critical primaries in Ohio and Texas just days away, SEIU members are already hitting the pavement as part of an extensive, multi-million dollar ground and air campaign for Sen. Barack Obama. With more than 150,000 members in the upcoming primary states, including 30,000 in Ohio, SEIU members are working to make the difference in the next critical contests. SEIU represents 20,000 workers in Texas, including 5,000 janitors who united with SEIU in 2005 to win health care, fair wages, improved working conditions, and a better life for their families.
SEIU members are waging an unprecedented effort to mobilize their coworkers and communities to elect Barack Obama,"said Anna Burger, Secretary-Treasurer of SEIU. "We are committed to bringing all of our resources to bear to ensure he is our next president."
Thousands of SEIU members are taking time off of their jobs or volunteering after work and on weekends to go door-to-door, work the phones, distribute worksite leaflets, and mobilize their communities to go out and vote for Obama. SEIU members are also appearing in television ads that will be going up soon in Ohio and Texas, focusing on Obama's record on the issues that matter most to working families.
SEIU member and janitor George Silva, who works in downtown Houston, is one of the many workers who will be doing their part to turn out the vote for Obama. "Just as janitors in Houston were able to make history a few years ago, we will do it again by helping Barack Obama to become the Democratic nominee and our next president,"said Silva."
