MEDIA ADVISORY for Jan. 14th: New Show at Bread and Roses Gallery Features Work that Explores Motivations for Voting in 2008

Artists Seymour Chwast's and Edel Rodriguez's Work Included in Collection

Opening Reception is Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at 5:30 p.m.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Gallery, founded by Bread and Roses, is opening a show that features work by 12 diverse artists on the motivations for voting in 2008.

Healthcare, immigration, and many other concerns that are driving working people to the polls are all colorfully depicted in this collection.

The artists who've contributed work include illustrator and graphic designer Seymour Chwast, who helped found Push Pin Graphic, Edel Rodriguez, Time magazine's art director, and Nina Talbot, whose "painted stories"have been seen by thousands of New Yorkers.

The artwork is included in SEIU's 2008 Social Justice Calendar.

The opening reception is Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Gallery in the offices of SEIU United Healthcare Workers-East. Some of the artists whose work is included in the calendar will participate in the opening. SEIU's top officers, president Andy Stern and secretary-treasurer Anna Burger, are expected to attend. Also expected to attend are members of the Writers Guild-East and their president Michael Winship. These union members create some of the most popular television dramas and comedies. They've been on strike since Nov. 5, 2007.

Bread and Roses was founded in 1979 as a cultural resource for union members and students in New York City who would otherwise have little access to the arts. Special emphasis is given to programs that signify and interpret their history while generating new artistic expression. Bread and Roses' gallery is the only labor art gallery in the country.
