Workers Stand Together For A Share Of The Profits
Los Angeles, CA-Following last week's "labor solidarity"rally and march down Hollywood Boulevard, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) members today launched a month-long billboard campaign in support of striking writers.
Assembled with the strikers in front of CBS Television City, janitors, nurses, security guards, home care workers and other SEIU members dispatched a mobile billboard, calling for workers to get their fair share of the profits as the Writers Guild of America (WGA) enters week four of its strike against the media conglomerates of the AMPTP.
"Writers make the shows we all enjoy possible,"said Ursula Epps, a registered nurse and SEIU member. "They should share in the profits they help make, not just the executives at the top."
The mobile billboard's circuit will take it past all of the major studios to rally strikers and send a message to the media moguls they face at the bargaining table. Along the way, the billboard will cruise Sunset Boulevard and around eateries such as The Grill on the Alley in Beverly Hills, playing a recorded message about fairness. Two additional stationary billboards are already on display in Culver City. (See the billboard images here, which feature SEIU nurses, a janitor, and the message, "Hey, Studios, Do the Write Thing")
Also on Tuesday, hundreds of SEIU members joined a "labor solidarity"march in New York City's Washington Square Park.
"Whether your work is protecting multimillion properties, cleaning the restrooms of the rich and powerful, or writing the stories that entertain a global audience, you deserve to share in the success of your labors,"said SEIU President Andy Stern. "Working people from all over are coming together to stand with the writers because working people believe work should be rewarded. It's time for the media moguls to get on the same page."
