Winning with Strategic Alliances

"Last month, my coworkers and I reached an agreement for a new contract and strategic alliance with Allina Hospitals & Clinics.

Barry McDonough Emergency Room Technician Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids Minnesota"As members of SEIU Local 113, we decided it was time for a new approach—one where we work together to make Allina the best place to work and the best place to get care in the Twin Cities. That meant putting an end to the "us vs. them" mentality in our workplaces and forming an alliance with Allina that will help us work and grow together.

"In addition to employment security and a commitment to achieve full employer-paid single and family health insurance, this new partnership will give us a true voice in decisions made at the hospital. We will sit on joint committees alongside our managers to set guidelines on how to best provide patient care, and we will help design programs that will make our workplaces safer.

"Our alliance was based on a partnership that over 30,000 SEIU hospital workers have formed with Kaiser Permanente Hospitals in California, a partnership that accomplised some amazing things since it began in 1997. Not only do SEIU hospital workers have some of the best wages and benefits in the state, but employee satisfaction scores have skyrocketed as well. And just last year, they renewed their agreement and created a new $100 million training fund for employees.

"We are entering a new era through our alliance with Allina. And although this partnership is going to help both Allina system and its employees, the patients are going to be ones who benefit most in the end."
